Craft & materials

Seven materials. No shortcuts.

Every piece in the collection is made from the same short list of materials, joined the same honest way. Here is what they are, where they come from and how they behave in a home.

Materials

What the pieces are made of.

  1. 01

    Walnut

    American black walnut, FSC-certified

    Deep, figured, our signature.

The timber most of the collection is built from. Dense enough for a slender leg, forgiving enough to carve a pedestal. It lightens a shade in its first year in sunlight, then settles.

    Used in

    • Beds
    • Dining
    • Living chairs
    • Consoles
  2. 02

    Teak

    Plantation teak, India

    Golden, dense, unbothered by weather.

Naturally oily, so it shrugs off humidity - which is why we use it for swings, verandah pieces and anything near a bathroom. Darkens gracefully with age.

    Used in

    • Swings
    • Dressing tables
    • Bunk beds
  3. 03

    Oak

    European white oak

    Pale, straight-grained, quiet.

For rooms that want to stay light. Its open, even grain takes a hard-wax oil beautifully and shows very little movement across the seasons.

    Used in

    • Bedside tables
    • Wardrobes
    • TV units
  4. 04

    Cane

    Natural rattan, hand-woven in-house

Woven on the frame it will live in.

We weave cane into a solid-timber frame rather than buying pre-woven sheet, so it never sags away from the edge. Airy, warm, and the reason so many of our fronts are arched.

    Used in

    • Consoles
    • Shoe storage
    • Bunk beds
    • Swings
  5. 05

    Stone

    Indian marble and engineered quartz

    Cool against warm timber.

Table tops in honed marble or a quartz composite, sealed and set on a timber sub-frame so the stone is never the structure. Veining is natural and never repeats.

    Used in

    • Dining
  6. 06

    Brass

    Solid brass, satin finish

    Solid, never plated.

Handles, feet and swing fittings are machined from solid brass and left unlacquered, so they take on a patina rather than wearing through to a base metal.

    Used in

    • Dressing tables
    • Wardrobes
    • Swings
  7. 07

    Textile

    Bouclé, linen, performance velvet

Chosen for the second hour of sitting.

High-resilience foam under natural-fibre cloth. Every upholstered piece can be covered in a fabric of your choosing; we hold a swatch library at the showroom and post samples on request.

    Used in

    • Living chairs
    • Dining
    • Beds

From board to piece

Six steps, in order.

Nothing here is unusual for good furniture. What is unusual is doing all six under one roof, with the same people, for every piece.

  1. 01

    Selection

Boards are bought rough-sawn and graded by hand for grain, colour and defects. Roughly a third of what arrives is rejected or relegated to internal parts.

  2. 02

    Drying

Timber is kiln-dried to 8–10% moisture content, then rested in the workshop for a fortnight to acclimatise to Indore's humidity before it is cut.

  3. 03

    Joinery

Frames are cut and joined by hand - mortise-and-tenon, dovetails, dominoes. Panels float in grooves so they can move with the seasons without splitting.

  4. 04

    Shaping

Pedestals, arms and curved backs are laminated and shaped on jigs, then hand-sanded through the grits. This is where the sculptural pieces earn their name.

  5. 05

    Finishing

Two coats of hard-wax oil, hand-applied and burnished. It is a finish you can repair at home with a cloth; we send a tin with every piece.

  6. 06

    Weaving & upholstery

Cane is woven on the frame; cushions are cut, sewn and fitted in-house. Every piece is then assembled, inspected and sat in before it is wrapped.

What that buys you

A piece we are happy to guarantee for a decade.

Because we choose the boards, cut the joints and apply the finish ourselves, we know exactly how a piece will behave in year four. So we put it in writing.

10 yr
structural warranty on frame and joinery
1 yr
on finish, cane, fabric and hardware
8–10%
timber moisture content at the bench
±2 cm
dimensional tolerance we hold ourselves to

Premium and luxury furniture, designed and made in India by I'm Rare

I'm Rare makes premium furniture for people who furnish slowly and keep things for a long time. Every piece - 11 categories, 56 designs at last count - is drawn in our studio and built in solid walnut, teak and oak, with hand-woven cane fronts, bouclé and linen upholstery, and solid brass fittings polished to a satin finish. The collection is curated rather than catalogued: a few resolved designs per category, each rendered true to its finish, most of them ready to ship.

Whether you are furnishing a new home, refreshing a single room, or specifying for a boutique hotel, office or café, the pieces are designed to sit together - the same timber, the same joinery language, the same quiet proportions - so a bed, a bedside table and a wardrobe from I'm Rare read as one room, not three purchases.

Furniture for every room in the house

Browse the collection by category: beds, wardrobes, bedside tables, dressing tables, bunk beds, living chairs, swings, consoles, tv units, dining, shoe storage. Each category page shows every design with multiple views, and every design links straight to a design expert on WhatsApp who can confirm dimensions, finish options and the current lead time.

Bedroom: beds, wardrobes, bedside and dressing tables

The bedroom range is where the collection began. Our beds (5 designs) are platform and panel beds in solid walnut and teak - the Arohi with its low, wrapped headboard, the Ira and Vanya with upholstered panels, the Aarav in a deeper, more architectural form. Pair them with bedside tables (5 designs) in oak and walnut, sized to sit flush with the mattress line, and wardrobes (5 designs) with fluted and arched fronts in soft, lacquered tones.

Dressing tables (5 designs) combine a drawer stack, a floating shelf and a framed mirror with integrated storage for the things that otherwise end up on the surface. For children's rooms and guest rooms our bunk beds (5 designs) are built-in style pieces with stairs, drawers and cane screens, engineered to be dismantled and reassembled without losing rigidity.

Living: chairs, swings, consoles and TV units

Living chairs (6 designs) are sculptural, solid-wood frames with deep, loose cushions - the kind of chair a room is arranged around. Swings (5 designs) bring the Indian verandah indoors: round and rectangular cane-and-timber daybeds on rope or chain, sized for one or two. Consoles (5 designs) with cane doors and tapered legs suit hallways and behind-sofa positions, and our TV units (5 designs) keep cables, consoles and remotes behind fluted fronts so the wall stays calm.

Dining tables and entryway storage

The dining range (5 designs) pairs sculpted timber pedestals with marble and solid-wood tops and matching chairs, in four-, six- and eight-seat lengths. At the front door, shoe storage (5 designs) is treated as furniture rather than a cupboard - cane-fronted cabinets with a bench, a mirror or an arched panel to hang a coat.

Ready to ship, or made to your measure

Most designs are held in small batches and leave the workshop within a fortnight. If a piece needs to be wider, shorter, in a different timber or a different cloth, one message on WhatsApp reaches a design expert who will confirm what is possible, the price difference and the revised lead time - typically four to six weeks for made-to-measure work. We deliver across India with white-glove installation by our own team, and every piece carries a ten-year structural warranty.

Materials and craft

  • Walnut - deep, figured, our signature timber for beds, chairs and consoles.
  • Teak - dense and golden, used where pieces may see humidity or sun.
  • Oak - pale and straight-grained, for bedside tables and lighter rooms.
  • Cane - hand-woven rattan, set into solid frames so it never sags.
  • Brass - solid, never plated; handles, feet and hinges age to a soft patina.

All timber is kiln-dried and finished in a hard-wax oil that can be repaired at home with a cloth. Upholstery is bouclé, linen or performance velvet on high-resilience foam.

Why I'm Rare is the considered choice for premium furniture in India

Because the collection is small on purpose. We would rather make eleven categories well than four hundred products quickly. Because every render on this site is the piece you receive - the same timber, the same proportions - and because the person you speak to on WhatsApp has sat in the chair and knows the drawer runners by name. And because when a room needs something slightly different from what is on the page, we make it.
